Colwyn Bay Gardens become a Centenary Field

14th March 2017

Categories: News

Queens Gardens in Colwyn Bay has been designated a Centenary Field by the Fields in Trust organisation following an application made by Conwy County Borough Council.

The Centenary Fields programme aims to secure recreational space in perpetuity to honour the memory of the millions who fought and lost their lives in World War I.

In early 2016 Conwy County Borough Council was approached by the Royal British Legion and the Fields in Trust organisation regarding the Centenary Field programme. The Council put together an application nominating Queens Gardens, Colwyn Bay to be part of the Programme.

Queens Gardens was designated as a Centenary Field in November 2016 and on 13 March 2017 a plaque was unveiled at the Gardens. The County Council retains ownership of the Gardens and will continue to maintain them.

Cllr Liz Roberts, Conwy’s Armed Forces Community Champion, said, “Seeing Queens Gardens recognised in this way and protecting this outdoor space for the benefit for future generations is a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in World War 1 and is in keeping with the spirit of our Armed Forces Community Covenant.”

Fields in Trust Cymru Committee Member, Mr J R Jones, said, “The Centenary Fields programme is a fitting way for us to mark the sacrifices made by so many in World War I whilst looking to the future through a living remembrance. We are delighted that Conwy County Borough Council is embracing Centenary Fields, commemorating the centenary of World War I for the people of Colwyn Bay in a way they can appreciate forever. We look forward to many more landowners following their lead.”
